Bodhgaya is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sight related to the life of the Buddha in North India. Visitors from around the world flock to pay their respect to the Bodhi tree where Gautama Buddha achieved his enlightenment. The diversity of pilgrims is represented in the array of temples and monasteries from around the world including Burmese, Sri Lankan, and Japanese monasteries; all reflecting the culture and traditions which accompany their specific Buddhist traditions.
Leave early morning for a full day of sightseeing in Rajgir, an ancient town with archeological relics dating to 1000 BC. Take the chair lift to the top of Ratnagiri Hill to visit the Japanese Shanti Stupa followed by visits to Vultures Peak and Nalanda University, an acclaimed Buddhist monastery between 5-1200CE. Leave at approximately 3 pm to return to Bodhgaya.Late afternoon visit the Great Buddha Statue and the Mahabodhi Temple Society to view the relics of the Buddha. At sunset, watch monks chanting their evening prayers.
